The Beginner Class is designed for those new to Pilates Reformer. It focuses on building a strong foundation in the core principles and movements of Pilates using the Reformer. Whether you're new to exercise, returning after a period of illness or injury, or simply curious about how Pilates can support your overall wellbeing, this class offers a safe and encouraging place to begin.
The Reformer provides gentle resistance and support, helping you move with greater ease and confidence. The emphasis is on learning how to move well—improving alignment, developing body awareness, and gently strengthening your body from the inside out.
Well-being in this class goes beyond the physical. Pilates encourages mindful movement and breath awareness, which can help reduce stress, lift mood, and support mental clarity. For those navigating anxiety, low mood, or recovery from physical or emotional strain, this class offers space to reconnect — with your body, your breath, and your sense of self.
We recommend attending 2–3 Beginner Reformer classes to become familiar with the equipment and to feel more confident in your movement. This will help you build trust in your body, progress safely, and experience lasting benefits for both your physical and mental health.
The Reformer Class is where your Pilates journey begins, and where you start building the fundamentals of movement, control, and connection to your body.
The Reformer offers support and guidance through its springs, footbar, carriage, and straps. These elements provide gentle resistance and feedback, helping you explore and feel proper movement patterns. For many, especially those recovering from illness, injury, or periods of inactivity, the Reformer is an empowering tool that encourages confidence, safety, and gradual progression.
Unlike the Mat, which requires more from your body in terms of balance and strength, the Reformer assists in improving alignment, stability, and proprioception. It offers a more accessible and inclusive entry point for all bodies and all stages of health.
Key Pilates Principles: Centering & Concentration
✔ Centering – All movements begin from your powerhouse—your core. This principle is central to building strength, resilience, and stability. When recovering from illness or seeking to enhance your wellbeing, core activation helps support posture, protect your spine, and reconnect you to your physical self. The Reformer enhances this process by providing feedback that deepens your awareness and engagement.
✔ Concentration – Mindful movement is healing. Bringing full attention to the Reformer and to each movement helps develop focus, reduce stress, and improve coordination. By tuning into posture, alignment, and muscle activation, you begin to restore balance—physically and mentally.
The Intermediate Reformer Class builds Strength, Focus, and Resilience. At the intermediate level, Reformer Pilates begins to gently challenge your body and mind while deepening the core principles learned at the foundation stage.
Here, the springs, straps, and carriage shift from offering support to providing resistance. This demands greater stability, concentration, and control — building strength in a way that is joint-friendly, adaptable, and sustainable.
For those recovering from illness, managing mental health, or seeking to build physical and emotional resilience, this class offers a space to reconnect with your body. The precise, focused nature of Reformer Pilates nurtures not just muscular strength but also clarity, confidence, and calm.
Key Pilates Principles: Control & Precision
✔ Control – Every movement is deliberate. Rather than allowing the springs to move you, you work with intention to resist and guide them. This mindful resistance promotes muscular strength, joint stability, and a strong mind-body connection — supporting your wellbeing on and off the Reformer.
✔ Precision – Pilates values quality over quantity. Fewer repetitions with good form create more lasting benefits than pushing through with poor alignment. Respect your body’s signals — this is a practice that should challenge without strain, and support growth without pressure.
This class is ideal for those ready to progress, whether rebuilding strength after illness, seeking mental focus, or continuing a journey of movement for long-term health and vitality.

Hydrate: Bring along some water to stay refreshed.
Download the physical activity readiness questionnaire: Complete and send it back to me at alison.pilates@outlook.com or bring a hard copy to the first session.
And throughout the class, you will hear me talk about:
Breathe Easy: It's important to breathe comfortably, and I'll help you think about controlled breathing to support each movement.
Take Your Time: Pilates is about precision and mindfulness, not speed.
Form First: Focus on deliberate movements to ensure proper alignment and target the right muscles.
Core Focus: Engage your core and keep it engaged throughout the session to protect your spine, especially during challenging exercises.
Engage Mindfully: Be conscious of the muscles you're activating, and take control of those muscles for optimal results.
